Approximately one in two women over the age of 50 will break a bone due to osteoporosis, and about 80% of Americans with osteoporosis are women, yet this ‘silent disease’ isn’t discussed as much as necessary.
Osteoporosis is a disease that causes bones to become weak and brittle, to the point where even mild stress on the bone can cause a fracture. This occurs when the formation of new bone tissue doesn’t keep up with the loss of the old one. Women are at a higher risk of developing osteoporosis, especially once they reach menopause. This is because estrogen, a hormone that protects bones, decreases significantly during this time, therefore increasing the risk of osteoporosis.
Osteoporosis is often called the ‘silent disease’ as it usually isn’t recognized until there’s a fracture, at which point, the disease is already developed. Some signs, such as receding gums and weak nails, are recognizable symptoms of the disease. While osteoporosis doesn’t have a definitive cure, there are preventive measures that can be taken. One of the main steps is to increase intake of foods rich in calcium and vitamin D, such as dairy products, salmon, leafy vegetables, etc. An increase in exercise is also a good prevention measure against this disease.
So, to all the women, it is time you take care of yourself, your diet and health and do a regular check up to keep your bones stronger for longer.
