The belief that "our identity as women is our ultimate strength, not a limitation" reshapes societal norms, inspiring both women and men to drive progress together. This vision underscores the essential role of men in achieving gender equality. In the UAE, women’s empowerment isn’t just a dream—it’s a vibrant reality that makes progress gleam.
The UAE boasts prominent feminists like Sheikha Mahra bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, whose leadership in initiatives such as the Dubai Women's Establishment has empowered women and advanced gender equality. Born in Dubai and educated in international relations and diplomacy, she has significantly impacted women's societal roles. Her advocacy continues to inspire and drive progress in the UAE. Feminism is a collective effort, and His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum exemplifies this through his support. In 2015, he founded the UAE Gender Balance Council to advance gender parity and increase women's leadership roles, demonstrating that the quest for equality involves everyone. The UAE's commitment to gender parity began with Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, who was the first to champion women’s empowerment. His advocacy for women’s roles in education and public life set the foundation for the nation’s ongoing progress in gender equality.
In the UAE, women are breaking new ground: they occupy 50% of the Federal National Council seats and lead globally in female parliamentary representation, according to the IMD World Competitiveness Yearbook 2020. They make up two-thirds of the public sector workforce and 61% of STEM students. Additionally, Forbes highlights UAE's top businesswomen, including Sheikha Lubna Al Qasimi and Rania Nashar, for their significant global impact.
Despite progress, societal biases still hinder women’s full participation. Yet, the UAE’s commitment to gender equality inspires hope and demonstrates that when women are empowered, nations thrive. By uniting efforts, we can advance global development and edge closer to true equality.
